How to Commission your own piece of art

Do you have a special memory, time or place that you would like captured in a painting either for yourself or a loved one? Commissioning a piece of art that marks a unique occasion such as a wedding, a significant birthday or an anniversary can be a really thoughtful and meaningful gift. Every year I take on a limited number of commissions for clients who wish to capture these special memories.

All my commissions are a collaborative process so I will ask a few questions to make sure we get the perfect result.

A few things that you might consider before commissioning a piece of art.

The Process

Do you have a particular size painting in mind to suit a specific space?

  • I can advise on what size might suit a particular space and quote accordingly, alternatively I can work to a budget and advise what size painting would make the best impact.

Does the painting require a frame?

  • Some paintings such as those on deep edge canvases do not need frames but sometimes a frame can really enhance a painting. I can supply a variety of different options that I have worked with in the past if you are unsure.

Do you have a reference photo or would you like me to take photos for you?

  • Photographs provided should be good quality (high resolution) and clear. Lower quality images can sometimes be used but this is at the artist’s discretion and may result in a less detailed drawing. Where possible I can visit the site and either take photos for your approval or capture the scene en plein air.

Is there a specific date that you would like the artwork completed?

  • Depending on my schedule and the medium used delivery time can vary greatly. For example oil paints can take a long time to dry and cure correctly. Please be mindful of this when placing an inquiry. I will advise on alternative options where the turnaround time is tight.

The Process

Once a size, composition, delivery date and final price have been agreed I take a 50% booking deposit before work begins. I will keep you updated on how the work is progressing and once it is near completion I will send photos to make sure you are 100% happy with the final piece. Minor details can be amended at this stage.

When the final piece is approved, the balance is paid and the artwork is carefully wrapped for delivery.
